Ontario Liberals Demand Public Inquiry into the Scarborough Subway Extension as Costs Double and Opening Slips to 2033

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

 JUNE 2, 2025

QUEEN’S PARK, ON — Andrea Hazell, MPP for Scarborough Guildwood and Ontario Liberal Critic for Transportation, is calling on Doug Ford to order a full, independent public inquiry into the Scarborough Subway Extension — a project that has nearly doubled in cost and slipped three years behind schedule, while Scarborough remains without rapid transit.

In 2019, Scarborough was promised a subway: $5.5 billion, open by 2030. Today it costs $10.2 billion and won’t open until 2033. The price has nearly doubled, the deadline has slipped three years, and no one in this government has explained where the money went.

Worse, they never told us about the delay. Scarborough learned its subway had been pushed to 2033 through a freedom of information request — not from the Premier, not from the Minister. A government that hides the truth from the people paying for it has forfeited their trust.

We have seen where this leads. Ford refused an inquiry into the Eglinton Crosstown; it opened six years late, at nearly triple its budget, with no one held to account. Scarborough cannot be the next Eglinton.

That is why Ontario Liberals are calling for a full, independent public inquiry into the Scarborough Subway Extension under the Public Inquiries Act, 2009 — with the power to compel documents and summon witnesses. An inquiry now, while the project is still being built, can course-correct before it is too late.

And because Scarborough cannot wait until 2033 for relief, we are also demanding immediate action: more frequent, more reliable replacement buses, and honest public updates on this project.

Scarborough has been patient. That patience has limits. This community deserves the truth, it deserves reliable transit, and it deserves a government that treats accountability as a duty — not an inconvenience.
