Community Advocate and Engineer Mazhar Shafiq Nominated as Ontario Liberal Candidate in Scarborough Centre

SCARBOROUGH, ON – Mazhar Shafiq, a community advocate and engineer, has been officially nominated as the Ontario Liberal candidate for Scarborough Centre.

“For years, Mazhar has advocated fiercely for the people of Scarborough Centre.

“He’s ready to join our team and help us cut taxes, get transit projects built and end the health care crisis to deliver more for you and your family. I’m excited to announce that Mazhar is officially the Ontario Liberal candidate for Scarborough Centre!”

— Bonnie Crombie, Leader of Ontario’s Liberals

“I’m honoured to seek the Ontario Liberal nomination in Scarborough Centre and stand up for our community.

“The Conservatives have failed Scarborough. Families are struggling with the skyrocketing cost of living, made worse by Doug Ford’s decision to cancel rent control and his failure to address the housing shortage. Our healthcare system is in crisis, with too many residents unable to find a family doctor, and the Eglinton Crosstown LRT remains unfinished, leaving Scarborough residents waiting for the transit they were promised.

“It’s time for real leadership and a plan to deliver for the people of Scarborough Centre. Under Bonnie Crombie’s leadership, the Ontario Liberals will prioritize Scarborough by fixing healthcare, addressing affordability, tackling the housing crisis, and finally delivering the reliable transit that our community deserves.”

— Mazhar Shafiq, Ontario Liberal Candidate for Scarborough Centre

Mazhar arrived in Canada at Pearson Airport 20 years ago determined to work hard and build a better life for his family. He worked as a highway engineer in Pakistan after earning his Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology in Lahore, and in Canada he earned a post-graduate certificate from Sheridan College and worked in various positions in the automotive sector.

Choosing to dedicate his career to public service, he took on roles with the provincial and federal governments, working to ensure underrepresented voices are heard by those in power. He has been an active supporter of local charities, community groups and hospitals, including the Scarborough Hospital. Mazhar and his wife, Summra, have two sons, and he is committed to building a better future for all our children.
