MPP Fraser Calls on the Government to Adopt Recommendations from the Chief Electoral Officer
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
23 April 2026
QUEEN’S PARK, ON. — Today, MPP John Fraser, Interim Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, held a press conference calling on the government to pass his bill, Fair and Free Elections Act, 2026.
The Fair and Free Elections Act comes from the recommendations from the Chief Electoral Officer:
- Extends the writ to a range of 36 to 42 days
- Allows the Chief Electoral Officer to appoint Returning Officers
- Requires the labelling of political advertisements generated from AI
- Prohibits the circulation of false or misleading information about an election, and gives the Chief Electoral Officer enforcement powers
Simply put, the bill, if passed, will give the people who are responsible for our elections the time to conduct a fair and free election.
“A fair and free election means we make it easy for people to vote,” said Fraser.
Voter turnout in the last two elections was below 50 per cent.
“Now that the government has moved away from fixed-date elections, and they can call it anytime they like, they need to ensure there is enough time to organize the election – 28 days notice is not enough.”
