MPP Andrea Hazell: ‘Ford’s Transit Mismanagement Derails Faster, More Frequent GO Service

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

QUEEN’S PARK, ON — Today, MPP Andrea Hazell, Ontario Liberal Critic for Transportation, issued the following statement in response to new reporting that the Ford government’s plan for faster, more frequent GO train service is now unlikely to materialize.

Doug Ford promised Ontarians faster, more frequent GO train service. That promise relied on a 25-year agreement with ONxpress — a consortium brought in to operate and deliver a new model of shorter, more frequent trains across the GO network. But just months before it was set to begin, this government cancelled that deal in year one.

To this day, Doug Ford refuses to tell Ontarians why the agreement was scrapped or how much that decision has cost taxpayers.

Leaked internal documents show that the plan for shorter, more frequent GO trains is now ‘unlikely to materialize’ at all. Despite abandoning that plan, Metrolinx is locked into multi-year contracts for trains and upgrades it no longer needs — agreements signed at the request of government for a service model that has effectively been thrown out.

That includes refurbishing train cars for years to come and converting dozens more that may even reduce seating capacity — all for a plan that is no longer moving forward.

This is exactly why I called for a value-for-money audit. Ontarians deserve to know how much has been wasted, what went wrong, and who is responsible.

These failures have real consequences: more time waiting, less room on trains, fewer departure options — and ultimately less time with your family.

Once again, Ontarians are being asked to pay more and accept less when it comes to transit.

This government promises to protect Ontario. More like a government that’s out of touch—just another campaign slogan lost in his poker game!
